Basketball
I started playing basketball when I was 11. When I was a kid, I was lucky to have a basketball court right in front of my house - literally right in front, where I could see others playing from the balcony. On top of that, my friends at school loved the sport. For me, it was a getaway from the hectic UPSR tuition classes during primary school.
Then I started playing for my class, representing my school and the state (Negeri Sembilan). I like the sport's competitive nature and its need for both creativity (yes, you need creativity if you play as a point guard or small forward) and teamwork. I made the state team, took three weeks off school to practice, and played at the national level (MSSM). Looking back, it's such a good experience. Not only did I get to play it along with my friends (ya, most of us got into the squad; they are good), but it was my first time leaving my house and learning to live away from home. There's no dorm; we literally sleep in a classroom on the floor on a thin bed. There's no bathroom, and we bathe in the toilet.
Since then, I've played once a week (at least). There was a period when I spent less time at court, but I made it to court at least once a month and never missed it (except during the COVID pandemic). I went back to court playing alone during the pandemic once we were allowed to. Tha'ts how much I love it.
Now, at the age of 43, I am still playing. I still get invitations to play in competitions, which I normally decline because of my commitment to work and family. I'd love to play in competition sometime in the future (maybe after I retire). Last year, I took part in one and won champion, playing along with some basketball superstars (if you can spot them in the photo below) ;)
